AgroForestry

Regenerating our lands

The ongoing challenges of deforestation, desertification, and drought pose significant threats to the region's development. Land degradation results in the decline of flora and perennial grasses, soil erosion, water scarcity, and bush encroachment, compromising the functional integrity of ecosystems.

With support from our partner WeGrow in Germany, AvaGro is investing in the cultivation and supply of the climate-smart Kiri tree (Paulownia), a fast-growing and lightweight species. Integrated into an agroforestry framework with indigenous trees and crops, Kiri trees can help to revitalise degraded land, support local livelihoods, and enhance biodiversity. This innovative land-use system improves soil fertility, conserves water, and addresses the global demand for sustainable timber.

The Kiri tree's exceptional environmental credentials include its capacity to sequester up to 40 tonnes of CO2 per hectare annually—far exceeding the 10 to 13 tonnes sequestered by most woodlands. Its low flammability makes it ideal for dry climates, while its re-growable nature supports a wide range of industries.

AvaGro has begun establishing its own plantations and supplying young plants to farmers with potential buy-back agreements. The goal is to enter local value-added timber markets and establish export pathways to Europe.

While the Kiri tree is an exotic species native to Asia, AvaGro takes measures to mitigate risks of invasiveness by planting sterile hybrids in controlled environments. These hybrids, as observed to date, pose no threat to local ecosystems.
